"Schwerin Theater Project" review by Allan Brito
13 Jan 2008
Allan Brito | Maquetes Electronic, 3ds max, Tutorial 3dsmax | Thursday, August 30th, 2007
This week the 3dm3.com published another tutorial of 3ds Max, this time dedicated to electronic models. More specifically on the modeling and rendering of the theatre Schwerin, Germany. The artist responsible for the tutorial is called Mohammad Saatchi, and he a professional specializing in architectural visualization. You have probably never heard about that theater in Germany, but now I can say that buildings like this, is one of the biggest challenges for anyone interested in doing serious architectural visualization. That's right, all because of the large amount of detail and ornamentation on the building. The process is totally different from a commercial building today, which has smooth surfaces and baratear to facilitate the construction.

As usual, the tutorial is in English. Then I will describe some important points for people who still have difficulty in understanding the text there. The author begins by pointing some problems he faces in the selection of references for modeling. He only has photographs in angles not very favorable in certain distance. Then he could not use those references very photographic.
The modeling began on the front of the building, with the columns and porticos present at the entrance of the building. According to the author, he did not use any specific measures, only took care to use the same proportions. The whole process was conducted using Box modeling, with the creation of basic primitives that were subsequently converted to Editable Poly. Thus was easier warp objects.
Beyond the Box modeling, as the Lathe other tools were used to create objects with a profile more cylindrical.
To make the bricks in the facade, he used the Bevel in Edit Poly. This is not necessary to use any texture to generate the geometry required to represent the bricks. As the surface that uses the bricks is small, it will not generate major problems with the model.
After the party with bricks is created, it is the union of all the elements to form mo model of the theatre. Even not using any texture, the tutorial shows a good example of how to use Box modeling to create electronic models. Since he had no references photographic side of this building, only the facade was created.
If you want to give this tutorial modeling, visit the 3dm3.com; electronic model with 3ds Max (or in his web site: Visualization Schwerin Theater Tutorial).
